It is a large, gray bird of fields and wetlands. It is often found in flocks. It has a small head and a widening neck towards its large body. They prefer forest edges, agricultural fields, open pastures, areas with shallow water bodies and marshes for their lives. They mostly feed in a wide variety of shallow wetlands such as permanent stagnant wetlands and marshy forest clearings, reed marshes and rice fields. They feed on small rodents, frogs, snails, insects and larvae, corn, barley, wheat, oats, sunflower seeds, peas, beans, peanuts, olives, blackberries, acorns, vegetables, potatoes, plant roots and shoots.
