Pine trees are vulnerable to beetles and other insects that bore through their rough bark to feed on or lay eggs in the soft tissue of the tree. This red pine has a beetle injury; its sap running from the point of entry. Rule of thumb here in NY, if the injury is 10` of less, it`s likely to be a native beetle and won`t harm the tree. When you see these injuries higher than 10`, it may be the Eastern pine beetle, which will kill the tree and its surrounding trees.
