Chromatin consists of long strands of DNA wrapped around proteins called histones. The primary structure of chromatin is the nucleosome, which consists of DNA wound around a core of eight histone proteins. These nucleosomes are further compacted and organized into higher-order structures, ultimately forming chromosomes during cell division.
