France, Loire Valley, Chenonceau Castle, Diane de Poitiers' Bedroom. The estate now occupied by the castle originally housed a manor house which was burned by royal troops in 1411 to punish the owner, Jean Marques, for conspiracy. In 1430 Marques rebuilt the castle along with a fortified mill, but his heavily indebted heir sold the castle in 1513 to Thomas Bohier, treasurer to Kings Charles VIII, Louis XII and Francis I. Bohier destroyed all the existing and ruined buildings except the watchtower and between 1515 and 1521 built a new castle for his wife, Catherine Briconnet, who entertained the French nobility there and hosted King Francis I on two occasions.
