In September 1957, Little Rock Nine 9 Black students enrolled at the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Their attendance tested Brown v. Board of Education Landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling making segregation in public schools unconstitutional. On the first day of classes, Governor Orval Faubus had the Arkansas National Guard block the Black students’ entry. President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent federal troops to escort the students into the school which brought national attention to the civil rights movement.
