The 11th Century Norman Castle at Corfe played a key role in defending the Purbeck Hills of Dorset for five hundred years before being besiged during the English Civil War in 1643 and again in 1646 after which it was'slighted' (ruined ) to prevent it holding out against the forces of Parliament ever again.
