Carcassonne is a fortified French town and was founded by the Visigoths in the fifth century. The fortress was restored in 1853 by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc and is a World Heritage Site of the UNESCO since 1997. It's name can be derived as an augmentative of the name Carcas.
