The Callanish Standing Stones are set in a stone circle erected 5000 years ago, they predate Stonehenge in Wiltshire England, by at least 2000 years, an important place for ritual activity, guessing that it was an astronomical observatory. The stone circle of 13 stones with a monolith near the middle, 5 rows of standing stones connect to this circle. The stones are all the same type of rock: Lewisian gneiss. Within the stone circle is a chambered tomb. There is a visitor centre adjacent to the car park |
