| In the very shadow of San Francisco financial district, it is one of only two of this cities streets to be directly oriented to the Ferry Building. The other being Market Street. Laid out in 1850 when this was a French neighborhood, by 1860 the Chinese took over as the White population followed the expanding land area due to landfill. The Chinese had shops here until the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed everything. After the fire, when these brick buildings went up, it was many used for prostitution. |
