The black starling is a chubby, medium-sized bird with yellow wattles on the nape, a stout, bicolored bill, and white flashes on the wings. Under tiny groups, usually in the canopy of a hill forest, as well as neighboring gardens and forests. Unlike related Southern Hill Myna, this species has a dark-based, bicolored bill with only two wattles localized to the nape. A harsh, downslurred "chewp" is uttered once or frequently, and the call is shorter than that of the Southern Hill Myna.
