On the third day after a forty minute artillery barrage, which was largely ineffective, the Confederate forces stepped out of the tree line on the opposite side of this field and marched rank on rank towards the Union lines on Cemetery ridge. This distance is approximately half a mile across an open field. The Confederates had to climb over fences like the one in the foreground, slowing their advance. This attack was a waste of good infantry. Longstreet had informed Lee this position could not be taken but Lee over-ruled him.
