The Baroque castle of Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou ranks among the most impressive examples of 18th century architecture in the Czech Republic and Europe. The original medieval stronghold was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century as a Renaissance castle. Its remains form the nucleus of the 18th century structure. The castle received its Baroque appearance under the ownership of the most important family residing in the Jaroměřice manor, the Questenbergs, between 1700 and 1737. The reconstruction was executed by the famous Austrian Baroque architect J. Prandtauer. The park in the French Style was designed at the time of reconstruction as well and continues as an English park on the other side of the river Rokytná. At its peak the town became the centre of a rich cultural life organized by count Jan Adam Questenberg. At that time the castle had a large library, a picture gallery, a theatre and its own orchestra, ballet, choir and soloists under the leadership of the Czech composer F. V. Míča, the author of the first opera in the Czech language. The castle is furnished with period furniture, thus preserving the atmosphere of an 18th century residence. The precious collections housed by the castle include antique musical instruments, valuable paintings, porcelain, clocks, furniture etc.
