| Bacharach is a historic town on the left bank of the Rhine River in the state of Rhineland Palatinate, Germany. It is located between Frankfurt and Mainz and belongs to the core section of the Central Rhine Valley World Heritage Site. The town was founded as a Celtic settlement and has a history of over 2000 years. It is known for its well preserved medieval architectural complex, including the 1213 Stigertorl Gate, 14th century city walls, 1614 wooden houses, and the ruins of the Gothic Werner Chapel. The layout of the town is characterized by cobblestone streets and colorful half timbered houses, surrounded by vineyards, continuing the long-standing tradition of Riesling wine making. |
