| Wat Mahathat or Temple of great relic, is a historic buddhist temple in Ayutthaya, Thailand famous for the buddha's head encased in the roots of a banyan tree. Constructed around 1374, it was a central religious and administrative site for the ancient Ayutthaya kingdom, though it was significantly damaged during the Burmese invasion in 1767. Today, the ruins feature a central prang, chedis, and halls. The temple is a Unesco World Heritage Site. |
