Pictured a low relief in stone of the Crucifixion inside the church of San Nicola from Myra in Locorotondo, Italy. It was erected around 1660, but the relief is much more ancient. It was allegedly found in pieces in a cave surrounding Locorotondo. Saint Nicholas, also called Nikolaos of Myra, was a historic Christian saint and Greek Bishop of Myra. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. His legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus “Saint Nick” through Sinterklaas.
