American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) shrub with vibrant purple berries in profusion in sunlight under deep blue sky. Callicarpa americana, the American beautyberry, is an open-habitat, native shrub of the Southern United States which is often grown as an ornamental in gardens and yards. American beautyberries produce large clusters of purple berries, which birds and deer eat, thus distributing the seeds. Native Americans use the roots, leaves, and branches to treat malaria and rheumatism. The roots are also used to treat dizziness and dysentery. In the past, US farmers crushed the leaves and placed them under the harnesses of their horses and mules to repel mosquitoes. Weiz, Styria, Austria, Central Europe, November 2021
